Carbon steel is typically smelted in converters and open-hearth furnaces. Converters are generally used for smelting ordinary carbon steel, while open-hearth furnaces are used for smelting various high-quality steels. The oxygen top-blown converter technology has developed rapidly and can replace open-hearth furnaces. The refined molten steel is poured into ingot molds to obtain ingots of various shapes. After forging or rolling, the ingots are processed into plates, strips, bars, and profiles of various cross-sectional shapes. Carbon steel is usually used directly in its hot-rolled state. When used for manufacturing tools and various machine parts, heat treatment is required according to the application requirements; as for steel castings, most require heat treatment.
